MATISCO, directed by Sébastien Barrier, is a movie about Mâcon and Mâconnais in the South of Burgundy in France.
The film is an invitation to contemplation and dream, a journey made of several chapters that each have their own atmosphere and personality. It softly takes the viewer through many aspects of the Mâconnais heritage, accompanied by quotes from poet Alphonse de Lamartine, blending past and present, reality and imagination.
Filmed mainly in chronophotography (timelapse, assembly of thousands of photos taken at regular intervals), this process allows to manipulate the time: the course of the sun and the shadows on the photographed subjects, the movement of clouds above the landscapes as well as the accelerated movements of the people in the city.
The epic aerials shots which accompany the timelapses are filmed by the company Fly Vision Films.
The music of Edouard Verneret has a very important role; it completes the emotion of the images.
With the participation of Alison Forest (Owl Collision) on one of the tracks.
Lasting about 35 minutes, the film is in full HD.
MATISCO is the original name of Mâcon at the time of Eduens, Celtic people.
Making MATISCO, a True Challenge
MATISCO is first inspired by the works of Godfrey Reggio and Ron Fricke (The Qatsi trilogy & Chronos) and the project has developed its own identity.
Achieve MATISCO was a challenge, mainly because the tools used and the project was been self-financed.
The aerial shots were filmed by Fly Vision Films with a Panasonic Lumix GH3 + Lens Lumix 12mm f/1.2 on a Hexacopter Drone FlyingEye.
But the film was primarily photographed and filmed with a GoPro camera HD3 Black Edition then edited with a computer who supported with difficulty the tasks asked for such a project.
Some camera movements were designed with the use of egg timer. The acquisition of a motorized rail traveling then brought a visual richness.
Edouard Verneret, composer and producer of the soundtrack, had to push also his equipment to its limits.
Sébastien Barrier was aware of the difficulties and challenges to make MATISCO.
Almost two years have been required to produce this non-verbal film where patience and determination enabled the creation of a unique documentary on the Mâconnais heritage.
640 shots were create for the project MATISCO among which more than 400 timelapses but only 329 shots were used for the movie of 35 minutes.

Sébstien Barrier Director
In 1997 Sébastien made his first short amateur film. To make a film, the script to editing, has become a passion. Seb then joined a film school in Nantes for 2 years as a certificates of audiovisual technician and cinema specialization assistant director. With a association of audiovisual productions, Sébastien made corporate films, fiction develops and offers its services assistant director for short films cinema. Seb leaves Nantes in 2010 to spend a year in New Zealand where he made promotional videos. Then in the Reunion Island, Sébastien experimenting other audiovisual techniques. Now back in France, Seb making artistic projects and corporate films.
Edouard Verneret Composer
When he was 10 he began taking piano lessons, which were to be the basis of Ed’s musical knowledge. In the meantime, he discovered computer music and spent a couple of years composing on his own, mainly orchestral and game/filmscore-oriented music, electronic music, even engaging in a few student projects. Constantly trying to improve, Ed found and developed the main part of his style and working approach during this time. When he was 18, he moved and started playing in a few bands, getting involved in the composition process and bringing his orchestral approach. 2013 marked the return of Ed to his first love, film music, finally finding the time to compose again for projects such as short films and documentaries. http://www.edouardverneret.fr
